How to Reach Pangong Lake from Leh

The standard route: Leh → Karu → Chang La (5,360m) → Durbuk → Tangste → Pangong Tso. Total: ~160km, 5–6 hours by car. Chang La is the third-highest motorable pass in the world.

The alternate route (via Tanglang La): Used when returning from Manali side. Longer but offers different scenery including Moriri valley viewpoints.

Camping vs Hotel at Pangong

Both options are available on the north shore (Spangmik village area):

  • Tent camps: ₹1,500–₹3,500 per person per night (including meals). You sleep 50m from the lake. Cold but magical. Recommended.
  • Permanent guesthouses: ₹800–₹2,500 per room. Less atmospheric but warmer. Good for families and those sensitive to cold.

Book accommodation in advance for June–August — lakeside camps sell out. Our packages include pre-booked lakeside tents.

What to Expect at Pangong

  • No mobile network (Airtel, Jio, BSNL — none work at Pangong). Embrace the digital detox.
  • No ATM within 100km — carry all cash from Leh.
  • Electricity is generator-based (usually 6–10 PM only).

Photography Tips at Pangong

  • Sunrise (5–6 AM): The lake is glass-still and the colours shift from deep purple to gold to turquoise. Best light of the day.
  • Late afternoon: Wind picks up and creates choppy reflections — dramatic but different from the still morning water.
  • Bring a tripod for sunrise and Milky Way shots at night.
  • UV filter is essential — the high-altitude light bleaches colours without it.
