Key point: BSNL has the widest coverage in Ladakh — especially outside Leh. If you have a dual-SIM phone, keep a BSNL SIM as a backup. However, BSNL 4G is inconsistent; Jio and Airtel are faster in Leh city itself.

Important: Foreign SIMs Don't Work in Ladakh

Ladakh is a protected/restricted border area. Foreign mobile SIMs (international roaming) do not work in Ladakh due to government regulations. Foreign nationals must purchase an Indian SIM in a major city (Delhi, Mumbai) before arriving.

Where Are the ATMs in Leh?

Leh city has approximately 5–6 ATMs:

  • SBI ATM — Main Market, Leh (most reliable)
  • J&K Bank ATM — Main Market (usually operational)
  • Punjab National Bank ATM — Leh city

Critical: ATMs in Leh frequently run out of cash during peak season (July–August). Withdraw sufficient cash in Delhi before departure — have at least ₹10,000–₹15,000 in hand when you arrive.

Can I Use UPI and Cards in Ladakh?

  • Leh city: Most shops and restaurants accept UPI (PhonePe, GPay) and cards in the main market area.
  • Outside Leh: Very limited. Nubra, Pangong, Tso Moriri, and Hanle are almost entirely cash-only.
  • Our package payments and tips to drivers/guides should be arranged in cash outside Leh.

Internet in Leh

Where can I withdraw cash in Leh Ladakh?

SBI and J&K Bank ATMs are the most reliable in Leh Main Market. ATMs often run out of cash in peak season (July–August). Carry sufficient cash from Delhi — at least ₹10,000–₹15,000 cash on arrival.

Do foreign SIMs work in Ladakh?

No — international roaming SIMs do not work in Ladakh due to border area regulations. Foreign nationals must buy an Indian SIM in Delhi, Mumbai, or another city before arriving.
