What to Expect at the Top
- An iconic BRO signboard (subject of countless photos)
- A chai shop and a few army structures
- Panoramic views of the Ladakh and Karakoram ranges on clear days
- Temperatures of 0–8°C even in July; can drop below -10°C in November
- Strong, gusty winds — wear a windproof jacket
- Oxygen levels are ~50% of sea level — don't exert yourself here
Safety Tips at Khardung La
- Do not stay at the pass for more than 30 minutes — altitude symptoms can escalate quickly at 5,359m.
- Drink water before and during the drive — acclimatize in Leh for at least 2 days before crossing.
- Cross in the morning (8–11 AM) — afternoon brings cloud, poor visibility, and colder temperatures.
- Keep moving if you feel dizzy, have a severe headache, or feel nauseous — descend immediately.
- Do not attempt if you have uncontrolled hypertension or severe AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) symptoms.
Is Khardung La Really the World's Highest Road?
The claim on the signboard says "World's Highest Motorable Road." However, several roads in the Himalayas and Karakoram have been measured at higher altitudes (including sections of roads in Tibet and the Marsimik La road in Ladakh itself). The claim is contested but the experience — driving to 5,359m — remains extraordinary regardless of the title.
