May is a transitional month in Leh Ladakh. Temperatures range from 5°C to 18°C in Leh town, with freezing nights at higher altitudes. The Srinagar–Leh highway (NH1) is generally open by early May. The Manali–Leh highway (NH3) typically opens in the third or fourth week of May depending on snowfall. Ladakh in May is possible but requires flexibility.

Road Conditions in May

The Srinagar–Leh highway (NH1) is generally open from April/early May. Flights to Leh operate year-round. The Manali–Leh highway (NH3) typically opens between 20–28 May — check BRO (Border Roads Organisation) official announcements before planning a road trip in May. In late May, the highway may open for only a few days before closing again for maintenance.

Is May Good for Visiting Ladakh?

May is excellent for travellers who want to avoid peak-season crowds (July–August). The landscape is spectacular — snow on the mountains, crystal-clear air, and the first spring greenery. Pangong Lake may still have patches of ice in early May, which is stunning for photography. The main limitation is that Manali–Leh road travellers need to wait for the highway to open. If flying into Leh, May is a good month.

What to Wear in Leh in May

Pack a down jacket for evenings and mornings — temperatures drop sharply after sunset. During the day, a fleece or light jacket is comfortable. At the high passes (Khardung La, Chang La), carry a windproof outer layer and gloves regardless of Leh temperatures. Snow boots are not required but trekking shoes with ankle support are essential.
