Every year, thousands of first-time travellers arrive in Leh and are overwhelmed — not by the logistics, but by the sheer scale of what they see. Ladakh is unlike anywhere else in India. This guide is everything we wish first-timers knew before landing at Kushok Bakula Airport at 3,256m.

The Single Most Important Rule for First-Timers

Rest on day one. No exceptions. The altitude in Leh (3,500m) is nearly four times higher than most Indian cities. Your blood oxygen level drops immediately on arrival. Most altitude sickness cases happen because people try to do sightseeing on arrival day. Book your first night in Leh, check in, eat a light meal, walk slowly around the guesthouse, drink water, and sleep. You will feel dramatically better on day 2.

What to Expect in Leh Town

Leh is a small town (population ~30,000) but well-equipped for tourists. The main market has restaurants, pharmacies, gear shops, ATMs (withdraw cash here — not available beyond Leh), and permit offices. There are no large malls or chain hotels. Internet is available but can be slow. Electricity is stable in town but may be limited at remote camps. Mobile coverage in Leh itself is good on Airtel and BSNL.

First-Timer Best Itinerary (7 Nights)

The most forgiving first-timer itinerary: Day 1–2 — Arrive Leh, rest, acclimatize, Leh local sightseeing. Day 3–4 — Nubra Valley (2 nights). Day 5–6 — Pangong Lake (2 nights with sunrise). Day 7 — Return to Leh. Day 8 — Fly out. Our 5-day Ladakh package and 9-night Delhi trip are designed with exactly this first-timer logic built in — proper acclimatization baked into the itinerary.
